The academic foundation of our learning program is the HighScope Curriculum which is a developmentally appropriate program focusing on carefully planned experiences in reading, mathematics, science and social studies. For example, curriculum materials and staff development in the area of literacy are compatible with the latest findings from research and practice. The approach is practical, easy-to-understand, and will be immediately applicable to our learning setting. The HighScope Curriculum will focus on growth, academics, and development for infants through pre kindergarten while offering support to the teachers and families.
The Orton-Gillingham Approach to reading will support a successful learning experience by utilizing the multi-sensory approach to develop reading skills in a young child/early reader. Research shows that retention skills are developed and vocabulary skills are expanded beyond the normal expectation through this strong approach to learning.
Read Right from the Start
A focus of the Read Right from the Start program is to emphasize, reading “Sophisticated Stories” to young children. Reading a story three times is recommended in the Read Right from the Start model. This model allows a child to hear the story two times which pushes information into the child and the third time is designed to pull information out supporting strong development of comprehension and recall skills.
Science and Environmental Exploration
Young children learn best when they are engaged in their learning and their environment. Our science lessons incorporate a blending of hands on discovery with real objects and concepts to encourage discovery. Teachers prepare lessons involving natural and earthly “objects” including trees, plants, vegetable/flower gardening, rocks, insects, reptiles, the sky, the planets and other related materials. Children chart findings and realize that nature and scientific properties are an important part of their every day life.
Social and Cultural Proficiency
Young children are exposed to various situations in a loving and accepting environment. This promotes acceptance and tolerance as learning and growing is taking place. Carefully planned lessons to promote an understanding of the world will ignite curiosity. This builds self confidence in each child along with a passion for continued learning. Decision making and tolerance are a focus as traditions from around the world are introduced.
The classrooms will be set up to offer necessary technology in a developmentally appropriate manner to include interactive white-boards, computers and listening stations. Computer software programs will assist with the development of eye hand coordination, critical thinking opportunities and decision making. The listening stations are used for language development. Teachers will be trained in all technology forms in order to make sure that children will have the most positive experience while preparing for the future of all school work.
